Sensitized or Sensitive Skin

Sensitive and sensitized skin can be frustrating, but with the right care, you can soothe and protect it. Do you know the difference? Sensitized skin is usually a result of using the wrong products and ingredients, which strip your barrier of its natural protection. Sensitive skin is more delicate and does not tolerate environmental factors, harsh chemicals, or strong fragrances well. The same can be true for sensitized skin, but it can usually be corrected easily.

Here are some tips:

Gentle Cleansing:

  • Mild Cleanser: Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that won't strip your skin's natural oils.

  • Lukewarm Water: Avoid hot water, as it can dry out your skin.

  • Pat Dry: Gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing.

Hydration:

  • Moisturize Regularly: Use a fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, a powerful humectant that draws moisture to the skin.

  • Ceramides: Ceramides help repair the skin barrier, making it less susceptible to irritation.

Sun Protection:

  • Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days.

  • Mineral Sunscreen: Consider mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are less likely to irritate sensitive skin.

Minimize Irritants:

  • Patch Test: Before trying a new product, test it on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions.

  • Limit Exfoliation: Over-exfoliating can irritate sensitive skin.

  • Avoid Harsh Ingredients: Stay away from products containing alcohol, fragrances, and other potential irritants.

Additional Tips:

  • Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate skin conditions. Practice relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.

  • Healthy Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can promote healthy skin.

  • Consult a Dermatologist: If your skin sensitivity is severe or persistent, consult a dermatologist for personalized advice.

By following these tips, you can help soothe and protect your sensitive skin, promoting a healthier and more radiant complexion.
